Internal repetition
The repetition of sounds within words that are close together in a piece of written or spoken language can be defined in two ways
Consonance
Assonance

The repetition of internal consonance sounds e.g wibble wobble the ‘bb’
Assonance
The repetition of internal vowel sounds e.g men sell wedding bells the ‘e’
Sibilance
The repetition of sounds
External repetition
Alliteration - repetition of the same sound at the start of words close together
Examples:
-fricative
-plosive
-nasal
-liquid
Fricative
Sounds made by the production of f/v/z
Plosive
Sounds made by the production of p/b/t/d/k/g
Nasal
Sounds made by the production of m/n
Liquid
Sounds made by production of L
Onomatopoeia
Process of creating a word that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes
Lexical onomatopoeia
Words that have a link with the sound that they make e.g bang slap pop
Non lexical onomatopoeia
Non words created to imitate a sound e.g ow ewww ahhh
Phono-aesthetics
The study of beauty and pleasantness associated with the sound of certain words or parts of words
Euphonic
A combination of pleasant, harmonious sounds, likely containing long vowel sounds, liquid or nasal sounds (L, m, n, y, w)
Cacophonic
A combination of harsh, discordant sounds likely frictions or plosives that require a staccato, explosive delivery
