Denotation
Denotation of a word is the literal or primary meaning of a word
Connotation
Connotation of a word is an idea or feeling which a word invokes
Loaded language
Loaded words have strong negative or positive connotations and can have powerful emotional impact
Synonym
Is a word with similar meaning to another word
Antonym
Is a word that means the opposite to another word
Hypernyms
A word with a broad meaning constituting a category into which words with more specific meanings fall
E.g vehicle - car, bus, bicycle
Hyponymys
The word with a more specific meaning that can be classified by the hypernyms are called hyponyms
E.g apple, banana for fruit
Euphemism
Words or phrases which substitute mild or vague language to soften the harsh reality of a subject or event
Dysphemism
These are the use of unfavourable, plain spoken or socially taboo expressions instead of more socially acceptable ones - may be offensive
Semantic field
Refers to a collection of words that are related by their topic
Amelioration
Words change meaning to become more positive over time e.g ‘sick’ meant unwell but now it means cools
Peroration
Words change meaning to become more negative over time e.g crafty meant clever now means dishonest
