Terminology Flashcards
shock
failure of the circulation, which leads to an inadequate supply of blood to vital organs.
SCIM
spinal cord injury management
heart attack
interruption of the blood supply to the heart itself, the heart muscle is being starved of oxygen.
Cardiac Arrest
when the heart stops pumping
Cardiac arrest is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body. Within seconds, the casualty will lose consciousness and, if the heart is not restarted, will die within a few minutes.
asphyxia
when the body can`t get enough oxygen.
anaphylactic shock
a serious, potentially fatal condition caused by a massive allergic reaction.
CPR
cardiopulmonary resuscitation
cramp
sudden, involuntary and painful contraction of a muscle
fainting
temporary reduction in the blood supply to the brain
FAST (for stroke)
face, arms, speech, time
heat exhastion
loss of salt and water from the body by excessive sweating or dehydration
observation
watching the activities without taking any direct action
pulmonary
anything related to the lungs and how we breathe
pulse
a wave of pressure in the blood stream created by each heartbeat
regurgitation
the return of partially digested food from the stomach to the mouth
respiration
breathing - getting air in and out of our lungs
RICE for soft tissue injury
rest, ice, comfortable position, elevation.
seizure
when normal brain activity is suddenly disrupted
supervision
directing the activity to take more control of the way a pool user behaves.
Asthma attack
muscles of the air passages go into spasm and narrow the airway, causes shortness of breath and wheezing.
Stroke
when there is either blood clot in the brain or ruptured blood vessel in the brain causing pressure on the brain.
freeboard
the distance between the surface of the water and the top edge of the pool.
