Drug
Study of drugs in humans for patients and healthy volunteers
Clinical Pharmacology
The use of drugs to diagnose, prevent or treat disease
Pharmacotherapeutic
A drug that cannot produce harmful effects even if administered in very high doses and for a very long time
Safety
A drug that elicit the responses for which it is given
Effectiveness
A drug that elicits only the response for which it is given
Selectivity
A drug actions that subside within an appropriate time
Reversible Action
A drug that we can know with certainty how a given patient will respond
Predictability
A drug that is given conveniently with low needed doses
Ease of Administration
Describes the drug’s chemical structure
Chemical Name
Official, nonproprietary name, not owned by any company and universally accepted
provided by the developers
Generic Name
Proprietary name, chosen by the drug company and registered as trademark
Trade / Brand Name
Drugs found to be safe and appropriate for the use without direct supervision of the healthcare provider
Over the Counter Drugs (OTC)
Also known as compliance. Defined as the extent which a patient’s behavior coincides with medical advice
