Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
The study of drugs that alter processes controlled by the nervous system
Neuropharmacology
It conducts an action potential down the axon of the neuron
Axonal Conduction
It is a process by which information is carried across the gap between neuron and postsynaptic cell
Synaptic Transmission
This is used for psychiatric disorders, suppression of seizures, relief of pain and production of anesthesia
Central Nervous System drugs
It impedes the entry of drugs into the brain and reason why children are much more sensitive to CNS drugs than adults
Blood Brain Barrier
It increases the therapeutic effect and decrease side effects. Downside is tolerance and physical dependence.
Adaptation to prolonged drug use
It directly or indirectly causes activation of dopamine receptors
Dopaminergic drugs
Drugs that block receptor for acetylcholine
Anticholinergic Agents
A group of disorders characterized by excessive excitability of neurons in the CNS
Epilepsy
A general term that applies to all types of epileptic events
Seizure
An abnormal motor phenomenon
Convulsion
An abnormal motor phenomenon
Convulsion
When excitation undergoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas
Partial Seizures
When excitation spreads widely throughout both hemispheres of the brain
Generalized Seizures
It is defined as involuntary contraction of a muscle or muscle group and often painful and decreases level of functioning
Muscle Spasm
