What does GRIEF mean?
Intense SADNESS about losing someone or something
What does TRAUMA mean?
Unpleasant & upsetting EXPERIENCE, it affects you for a LOOOOONG time
What does DEPRESSED mean?
Very UNHAPPY
Depression is caused in two ways. Name and explain these 2 ways
1) Something stressfull/traumatic happened
Examples are: *when someone dies
*moving
*losing a pet
*end of a relationship
(this type lasts for a short time, but could
continue for a long time)
2) Begins with NO obvious reason.
Could be a chemical imbalance in the brain
Treat it with = anti-depressant medicine
Explain the word “crisis”
When you are SO STRESSED,that you cannot deal with a situation
Give a few examples how you can treat someone who has experienced trauma
- need support of friends & family
- help from professional health care workers(doctor)
- get involved in positive activities (focus on
something good)
What does “counterproductive” mean?
Achieving the opposite result to the one you want
We often don’t know how to deal with a difficult situation. (depression;grief;trauma;etc) Then often use alcohol and/or drugs to escape the feelings.
When you avoid dealing with a problem, it is not helpful. Why is it counterproductive?
It makes you feel worse, make you suffer more
Name 3 strategies to respond to CHALLENGING situations
1) ACCEPT your feelings
2) STOP and ‘chill out’ - take a break, relax
3) PLAN what to do next
Name 2 strategies to deal with DEPRESSION
1) Give yourself something to look FORWARD to
(every day) - example: nice bath, walk
2) Avoid alcohol & drugs
Name a few strategies for working THROUGH the process of GRIEF & LOSS
1) TALK with someone
2) Carry a REMINDER of the person who died
3) Create a MEMORY book
4) Keep a DIARY to write your feelings
5) Join a SUPPORT GROUP
6) PRAY
