TENSION & UPTHRUST Flashcards
What is a spring?
A device that stores elastic potential energy. It obeys a law called Hooke’s Law.
Stretching a string makes it ________, and compression a spring makes it _________.
pull back ; push out
What is the formula for Hooke’s Law?
k = f/x
k = spring constant
f = spring force
x = spring stretch/compression
What is Hooke’s Law?
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force.
What is upthrust also known as?
Buoyant force
What is upthrust?
Acts on an object when partially or fully immersed in a liquid or gas
What does upthrust depend on?
- Density of fluid
- Volume displaced
What is the Archimedes’ principle?
Upward buoyant force that is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object
For a boat to float:
upthrust = weight
What is the weight of water?
1L = 1kg
For a boat to sink:
weight > upthrust
