Tenofovir
Pharmacologic Class: NRTI’s
Therapeutic Class: Antiretroviral
Action
Inhibits activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and HBV reverse transcriptase by competing with the natural substrate deoxyadenosine 5’ triphosphate.
Incorporation into the DNA by DNA chain termination.
Use
To treat HIV-1 infection.
To treat chronic HBV (Hep-B)
Complications
Acute Hepatitis
Pancreatitis
Angioedema
Hypokalemia
Lactic Acidosis
Contrindication/Precaution
Hypersensitive to tenofovir or its components.
Interactions
Atazanavir
Didanosine
High Dose or multiple NSAID
Aminoglycosides
Client Education
Take as prescribed, if missed dose take ASAP but do not double dose, do not stop taking without consult with provider.
Bone density scanning may be ordered
S/S of infection
Avoid NSAID use
Do not breastfeed if HIV and during therapy
Increase intake of Vitamin D and Calcium
Dose
300mg/day must weight 77lbs
