Pharmacologic Class: Nucleoside Analogue
Therapeutic Class: Antiretroviral
Action
Inhibits herpes virus replications by inhibiting DNA polymerase, premature termination of DNA synthesis.
Use
To treat initial episodes of herpes genitalis.
To treat recurrent episodes of herpes genitalis intermittently.
To treat Varicella-Zoster infection in immunocompromised patients.
Treat HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections.
Complications
Seizures
Acute renal failure
Hepatitis
Thrombocytopenia
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
Coma
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitive to acyclovir or valacyclovir or their components.
Interactions
Cimetidine
Probenecid
Mycophennolate Mofetil
Client Education
Does not cure herpes infections, helps manage S/S
Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen
Increase fluid intake during treatment
Notify provider if become pregnant
Manage herpes outbreak at the first sign of symptoms.
Dose
200mg/Q4 for 10 days
