Tendon & Ligament Flashcards
What is the purpose of tendons?
transmit tensile force from muscle to bone
Have a positional role (position the skeleton)
Extensors
What are the 2 distinct junction ends in tendon?
- myotendinous junction (MTJ)
- osteotendinous junction (OTJ)
** In-between is the tendon body
What is the function of flexors?
Some are specialized as energy storing/elastic tendons (an additional
function for efficient high-speed locomotion)
myotendinous junction definition
interface between muscle & tendon that-
transmits force (blue)
osteotendinous junction definition
where tendon attaches to bone (blue)
Ligaments
-stabilizes joint & skeleton
-Guides joint movement but limits the freedom of movement
-Proprioception in some joints
What kind of tendons would muscles
used for fine movements have
Long and thin
What kind of tendons would muscles
used for powerful movements have
Short and broad
What increases tendon stress?
muscles with greater cross-sectional area produce greater force
What gives collagen fibrils their high mechanical strength?
Collagen cross-links
