Q

what are the 3 regions of a tendon

A

external (free) region
aponeurosis (internal tendon)

Q

what are the properties of the free region of tendon

A

only tendon structures in this area
- where most ruptures occur

Q

what are the properties of the aponeurosis

A

attachment area for muscle fibres (myotendinous)
tendon folds around the muscle to increase SA
- increased SA = decreased stress

changes stress from tensile to shear
- tendon is better at resisting shear stress but doesn’t want to be under as much tensile load

Q

what are properties of the osteotendinous junction

A

where tendon inserts into bone (enthesis)
end of free region of tendon

from tendon –> fibrocartilage –> calcified fibrocartilage –> bone

Q

what is the function of collagen (type I and II) in tendon

A

responsible for tensile strength
type I (97%) = force transduction
type II (3%) = high tensile resistance
