Temporal/infratemporal fossa Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the infratemporal fossa?
- Anterior: infratemporal (posterior) surface of maxilla
- posterior: vertical plane of the styloid process
- superior: infratemporal surface and crest of greater wing of sphenoid bone
- inferior: horizontal plane of alveolar margin of the mandible
- lateral: ramus of mandible
- medial: lateral pterygoid plate
What are the muscles of mastication?
masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid
Origin and insertion of masseter
O: zygomatic arch
I: lateral angle of mandible
Origin and insertion of temporalis
O: temporal fossa and temporal fascia
I: coronoid process, ramus of mandible down to 3rd molar tooth
Origin and insertion of deep head of medial pterygoid
O: medial side of lateral pterygoid plate & pyramidal process of palatine bone
I: medial angle of mandible
Origin and insertion of superficial head of medial pterygoid
O: tuberosity & pyramindal process of palatine bone
I: medial angle of mandible
Origin and insertion of lateral pterygoid upper head
O: roof of infratemporal fossa
I: TMJ disc
Origin and insertion of lower head of the lateral pterygoid
O: lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
I: fovea of the mandible
Innervation of masseter
CN V3, masseteric nerve
Innervation of temporalis
CN V3, deep temporal nerves
Innervation to medial pterygoid
nerve to medial pterygoid from VN V3
innervation to lateral pterygoid
nerve to lateral pterygoid from CN V3
Action of mandible
elevate mandible
action of temporalis
elevate and retract mandible
action of medial pterygoid
elevate and laterally move the mandible
