Temperature, Thermal Energy, and Heat Flashcards
What does temperature mean?
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object.
How many temperature scales are there?
3; Fahrenheit, Kelvin, and Celsius.
Which country uses the Fahrenheit scale?
The United States of America.
What temperature scale do most countries use?
The Celsius scale, although some scientist use the Kelvin scale too
When does water freeze (fahrenheit scale)?
Water freezes at 32 F and boils at 212 F
When does water freeze (celsius scale)?
Water freezes at 0 C and boils and 100 C
What is absolute zero?
Absolute zero is the lowest temperature possible, which is 0 K. 0 K = 273 C.
What is the formula to change fahrenheit to celsius?
5/9 [T(F) - 32]. 5 x [ Y ] /9
What is the formula to change celsius to fahrenheit?
9 x ( C ) / 5 + 32.
What is thermal energy?
Thermal energy is the total energy of all the particles in an object
What are the two factors that effect thermal energy?
Thermal energy depends on the temperature of an object, and the number of particles in it.
What is heat?
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
What is the SI Unit of heat?
Joules
