Temperature in Earth Flashcards
What is temperature in the earth?
Temperature is imprecisely known compared to structure
What is surface-gradient measured to be?
Near-surface gradient is measured to be: ~30°C/km
What does this mean?
For every kilometre you go downwards, the temperature increases by around 30°C. However, this is not realistic
What are the depth profiles of Geothermal and solidus?
In the outer core the actual temperature greatly exceeds the solidus, and hence it is liquid. In the aesthenosphere the actual temperature is a little higher than the solidus, and partially molten (but only a few %)
What is Geotherm?
Temperature profiled with depth
What is solidus?
Melting point with depth
