How this related to whats happening in earth Flashcards
What two mechanisms move heat in the earth?
Conduction and convection
How does conduction move heat?
Conduction moves heat from the inner core to the outer core
How does convection move heat?
Convection moves heat from the outer core to the lower mantle and then to the upper mantle
Where else does heat release by conduction and advection?
Heat is released by conduction and advection (especially through volcanoes) through the earth’s crust
How does heat move in crust?
Mostly heat advection via magma flow, plus some conduction (via vibration of atomic lattices)
How does heat move in the mantle?
Mostly thermochemical convection between a hotter core and colder lithosphere, plus some upward heat advection from asthenosphere and conduction (via vibration of atomic lattices). Mantle is a poor electrical conductor
How does heat move in the outer core?
Mostly compositional convection, plus some heat conduction (via electron transfer in iron-rich fluid)
How does heat move in inner core?
Mostly heat conduction (via electron transfer in iron-rich crystal matrix), plus some thermal convection
What else contributes to these mechanisms?
Thermal radiation may further contribute to and enhance these mechanisms
