The magnetotelluric technique is one of many electromagnetic geophysical techniques used in science and history

Why is it important?
A
It is particularly important in plate tectonic studies because it can tell us which parts of the crust and uppermost mantle are more electrically conductive (e.g. liquid magma or hot water-bearing rocks) or resistive (e.g. cold dry rocks)
