Q

Ectotherms

A

-Use surroundings to warn their bodies. Core body temp is heavily dependent on their environment
-All invertebrate animals, fish, amphibians and reptiles
-On land ectotherms face bigger struggles than in water (high heat capacity)

Q

Behavioural responses ectotherms

A

-Bask in sun
-Orientate their bodies so that the max surface area is exposed to sun
-Extend areas of body to increase s.f.a exposed to sun
-Conduction (pressing bodies against warm ground)
-Exothermic metabolic reactions (vibrate to raise temp or vibrate wings to warm up)
-Shelter/dig/move into mud and water/cool stones/orientate for smallest s.f.a

Q

Physiological responses in ectotherms

A

-Colour (dark=absorbes) (light=reflects)
-Alter heart rate to increase/decrease metabolic rate and affect warming/cooling across body surfaces
-Eat less as less energy regulating temperatures
