7.3 Measuring the process Flashcards
Measuring capacity of lungs
-peak flow meter=device measures rate at which air can be expelled from lungs
-vitalographs=more sophisticated version of peak flow, tested patient breathes out as quickly as they can through a mouthpiece and instrument produces graph of amount and how quickly air breathed out (forced expiratory volume)
-spirometer=measure different aspects of lung volume/investigate breathing patterns
Tidal volume
-volume of air that moves in/out of lungs with each resting breath
Vital capacity
-volume of air that can be breathed in when strongest possible exhalation is followed by deepest possible intake of breath
Inspiratory reserve volume
-max volume of air you can breathe in over and above a normal inhalation
Expiratory reserve volume
-extra amount of air you can force out of your lungs over and above normal tidal volume of air you breathe out
Residual volume
-volume of air that is left in your lungs when you have exhaled as hard as possible
Total lung capacity
Sum of vital capacity and residual volume
Breathing rate
Number of breaths taken per minue
Ventilation rate
Total volume of air inhaled in 1 minute
=tidal volume x breathing rate (per min)
