Biotechnology uses Flashcards
Definition of biotechnology
The industrial use of living organisms to produce food, drugs or other product
-or to carry out useful services, such as sewage treatment, composting and bioremediation
Living organisms
mostly microorganisms or parts
Immobilized enzymes
-surface immobilisation
-entrapment
-purity, cost, efficicency
Culturing microorganisms
-lab (aseptic technique)
-industry
-standard growth curve
-factors to control
Food production
-direct (Quorn)
-indirect (using M.O to change substance into another)
Medicine
-insulin (hormone)
-penicillin (antibiotic)
Bioremediation
-process of removing pollutants from the environment
-may be natural organisms or GM organisms
Why use them?
-reproduce rapidly
-have simple growth requirements
-occupy very little space
-can be genetically engineered
-grow at relatively low temperatures
-grown anywhere in world
-produce pure products
-grow on otherwise useless or toxic materials
-grown on industrial scale to perform duties useful for large numbers
Ideal growth condition
-correct nutrients
-temp
-pH level
-moisture levels
-availability of gases
Types of enzyme used
-contained within the cells of an organism (intracellular enzymes)
-contained within cells
-secreted naturally by microorganism (extracellular enzymes)
