Temperament Flashcards
What is the definition of temperament?
Pattern of behavioural and emotional reactions to stimuli, evident early in life.
What are the two classes of temperament
High reactive (Inhibited)
-Low threshold of fear/distress response. More likely to have fear response in new situation.
Low reactive (Uninhibited)
-High threshold for fear/distress response. Less likely to have fear response. More likely to be calm.
What did Kagan think could happen to high reactive kids
More likely to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders in adolescence.
What did Kagan think could happen to low reactive kids.
May require higher threshold of stimulation to get physiological response –> conduct disorders.
What was Schwartz experiment about
Structural Differences in Adult Orbital and ventromedial prefrontal cortex.
What did Schwartz find about high reactive adults
Thicker cortex in right ventromedial prefrontal cortex than low reactive group. Associated with more defensive and fear responses. Connects to other areas of the brain that illicit sympathetic nervous systems.
What did Schwartz find about low reactive adults
Thicker cortex in left OFC than high reactive, which modulates impulses and rewards, helps educate and suppress unpleasant feelings.
