ROLE OF IMMOBILIZATION DEVICE
For accurate delivery of a prescribed radiation dose to a target volume while sparing surrounding normal and critical tissues.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD
IMMOBILIZATION DEVICE
- Ease of Use
- Ease of making the device
- Comfort for the patient
- Minimal space requirement for storage
- Resistance to bending and stretching
- Minimal perturbation of the beam so as not to
produce artifacts in image acquisition. - Its materials should minimally attenuate the
radiation beam.
The most common and is made from rigid
plastic that becomes pliable when placed in
warm water. When it is wet, it is placed over
the patient’s body and conforms to the
contour of treatment area
AQUAPLAST OR THERMOPLASTIC MASK
Custom, bean bag type pillows that are placed around
the patient’s body.
VAC LOC
The patient is positioned in prone as it allows the small
bowel to drop below the lateral field to avoid severe
side effects.
BELLY BOARDS
3 types of treatment techniques
2D, 3D, IMRT (INTENSITY MODULATED
RADIATION THERAPY)
Safety Features
- Door Safety Interlocks
- CCTV Camera
- Intercom System
- Warning Lights
- Emergency-Off buttons (couch, gantry stand,
modulator, and control console) - Additional Emergency-Off buttons
What is LINAC?
High radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic
waves to accelerate charge particles (i.e.
electrons) to high energies in a Linear Path inside
a tube-like structured called Accelerator
Waveguide.
The resonating cavity frequency of the Medical
LINACs is about 3 Billion Hertz (cycles/sec).
- This is the most common device to treat cancer
with EBRT (External Beam Radiation Therapy).
Is where the patient lays still to
receive the radiation treatment.
TREATMENT COUCH
A large rectangular cabinet that is firmly
secured to the treatment room floor or wall.
DRIVE STAND
It provides thermal stability
to the system.
WATER COOLING SYSTEM
It helps direct the x-ray (photons) or electron
beams to the patient’s tumor.
* It rotates 360 degrees around a line of point
called the ISOCENTER.
* Its components:
a. Electron Gun
b. Accelerator Structure
c. Treatment Head
GANTRY
- Electrons were produced by Thermionic
Emission.
ELECTRON GUN
It is a more common approach which spares much of the small intestine and
shields the spinal cord and the vast majority of the kidneys from half of the
beams
4-FIELD TECHNIQUE (BOX FIELD TECHNIQUE)
