teleological arguement - philosophers Flashcards
F. tennants aesthetic argument quote
“becomes more persuasive when it renounces all claims to proof and appeals to logical probability… it becomes stronger when it takes as the most significant fact… the saturation of nature with beauty”
“god reveals himself in many ways; and some men enter his temple by the gate beautiful”
w.Paley’s watch quote found in Natural Theology
“suppose id pitched my foot against a stone, and i were asked how the stone came to be there, i might possibly answer… it had lain there forever”
VS
“but suppose i had found a watch… i should hardly think of the answer i had given before… its several parts are framed and put together for a purpose… the watch must of had a maker”
F.Tennant aesthetic argument in 1928 philosophical theology
> humans have a natural appreciation for beauty and things which enhance it unlike any other animal
i.e. nature, poetry, cosmetics
humans are rational and only things essential for survival surround us due to “survival of the fittest”
humans appreciate beauty as a direct consequence of being created by an benevolent God
God created a worlds for humans to live in and ENJOY so beauty wasn’t essential for survival but a product of being made by a loving God
F.Tennant’s anthropic argument in 1928 philosophical theology
> nature provides exactly what we need for existence
natural world has rational analysis for data
evolution has lead to humans
- > evolution supports his theory
