cosmological arguement - Aquinas Flashcards
aquinas first way
motion or change - “unmoved mover”
things cannot be moved or changed on there own and something must have sparked this outside of science
God is omnipotent and so is the only thing that can move without a cause therefore all things must have been “moved” by “that which all men call God”
aquinas second way
doesnt agree with concept of infinity
cause and effect could not go back for all off time, there must have been a first cause
no effect with out a cause, and to take away to cause is to take away the effect
efficient cause > intermediate cause > ultimate cause
finger pushing > first domino falling > chain reaction
aquinas third way
contingency and necessity
everything has exists has the potential not to exist
if everything was contingent i.e. had a begining then nothing would exist because nothing could cause that begining
a non-contingent being outside of time must exist to have brought us into existence
> God = a nessesary being
aquinas first way example
“that which is actually hot, as fire, makes wood, which is potentially hot, to be actually hot and therefore changes it”
> things cannot be potentially hot and actually hot, they are either one or the other
aquinas third way quote
“if everything is possible not to be then at one time there could have been nothing in existence,,, it would have been impossible for anything to have begun or exist… and thus now nothing would be in existence which is absurd”
