TEETH Flashcards
Describe the location and function of Incisors and canines
At the front of the mouth, used to bite and tear pieces of food
Describe the location and function of premolars and molars
At the back of the mouth, where it is used to chew and grind food into smaller sections.
Describe enamel and explain its function
Enamel is the hardest substance in our body, it is the part of the crown; it covers the tooth and protects the tissue inside.
Describe dentine
Dentine is found underneath the enamel, it is less hard than the enamel, hence will decay easily if the enzyme is worn away.
Describe and explain pulp
It is the central part of the teeth, it is made up of soft tissue and contains blood vessels and nerves.
Describe cement and explain its function
It covers the root of the tooth while doing so stabilizing it
Explain how tooth decay happens
- Plague forms on the enamel, if not removed it turns into tartar.
- When we eat foods containing sugar, the bacteria feed on it,
- The bacteria respire, and as a by-product forms acids
- The acidity dissolves the enamel of the tooth, then the dentine on the inside. This leads to tooth decay.
How to prevent tooth decay
Brush regularly using fluoride toothpaste to prevent plague.
Limit sugary foods and drinks
Visit the dentist for regular checkups
How does gum disease occur
- It occurs when plaque accumulates around the sides of the tooth and the gingiva
- When the plaque isn’t removed the bacteria work their way down around the roots of the tooth
- The tooth will be unstable and may fall out, if not will have to be removed.
