OSMOSIS NECESSARY DEFINITIONS Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution (high water potential) to a concentrated solution (low water potential).
What is a partially permeable membrane?
It only lets water pass through it, and won’t let larger molecules dissolved in water pass through it
What is active transport?
The movement of particles through a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration using ATP energy against the concentration gradient.
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from a higher concentration to a lower concentration down a concentration gradient, as a result of random movement.
Where does the energy for diffusion come from?
The energy for diffusion comes from the kinetic energy of the random movement of molecules and ions.
Example of active transport in plants?
Root hair cells in plants take in nitrate ions from the soil through active transport.
Example of active transport in animal cells?
Glucose uptake by epithelial cells of villi
