Tectonics Keywords Flashcards
Hazard
involves people and disrupts day to day life, but there is only a chance of it happening
Disaster
event where losses are actually experienced and harm is caused
Vulnerability
based on where people live and only refers to people
Economic factors (lost jobs, income, assets, cut off global econ)
Social (disadvantaged groups, how people live)
Knowledge (education/training, no evacuation plan)
Environment (population growth in high risk areas or poor infrastructure)
Political (different govs don’t agree)
Capacity to cope
partially depends on governance, the strategies they implement and how organised they are
However, it also includes how confident individuals feel e.g drills, faith in government
Geotherm
temperature at any given depth into the Earth
Focal depth
how far down (depth) the earthquake originates
Liquefaction
when ground shaking causes sediment to behave like a liquid/solid surface starts to flow
Forecast
likelihood of an event
Environmental determinism
physical geography shaping attitudes (especially if you can’t rebuild the country as more hazards keep occurring)
Mid-ocean ridge
- Magma collects under divergent boundaries, and rises in waves as density is lower than the mantle
- Exploits developing fractures, and erupts through the surface to form a ridge
- Cools and solidifies to form land
Stress
Things done to the slope
Strength
Things that hold the slope together
Disaster capitalism
emphasise one aspect of an event and is not consistent with reality (used to generate profit)
Hazard profile
compares all the physical processes to help identify and rank hazards. Also helps to decide how to allocate resources and attention
