Tectonics: 1.2 - Crackin' Kashmir (C.S) Flashcards
Pressure and release model
Model that states a disaster is a combination of human vulnerability and natural hazards
Human vulnerability
Vulnerability progresses from: root causes -> dynamic pressures -> unsafe conditions
Root causes
National/global factors of vulnerability (the ‘why’)
The trigger point of vulnerability
Examples: limited access to power, infrastructure, or resources
Or ideologies: political systems, economic systems (capitalism)
Dynamic pressures
Regional factors of vulnerability (‘the how’)
The means through which a population becomes vulnerable
Examples: lack of training and appropriate skills
Rapid population growth
Deforestation
Debt repayment schedules (may have little money left after repaying a debt, then being forced to deal with an EQ straight after)
Unsafe conditions
Local factors of vulnerability (the ‘what’)
The conditions a population lives with that makes them vulnerable
Examples: fragile physical environment, fragile local economy
