Tectonic Processes Flashcards
Lava flows
Streaks of lava that flows form a volcanic vent
The viscosity and speed depends on the type of volcanic eruption
Pyroclastic flow
Caused by a very explosive eruption when the eruption column itself collapses and can’t continue to rise
Might happen when the material boils over from an eruption vent
Tephra
Tiny particles of ash and rock and natural glass blasted into the air by a volcanic eruption
Transported by winds fr thousands of miles
Electrostatic can prompt thunderstorms which can cause Lahars
Gas eruptions
Magma contains dissolved gases and these are released from the liquid magma as it reaches the surface
Lahars
Caused by rain mixing with either ash on the steep side of the volcano creating a big mudflow or ash mixing with rain
Jokulhlaups
Volcano beneath an ice cap erupts and large amounts of ice melts bursting out from the ice cap erupts and surging across the plain surrounding the ice caps
