What is the main issue of the supply chain used to harvest their cotton?
Children as young as 5 are harvesting the cotton meaning they are missing out on vital education which is seen as a human right.
What are the dangers of the working conditions for cotton harvesters?
They work with unknown chemicals, live in unsanitary conditions and have a lack of water.
What is the Uzbekistan’s governments defence for allowing child labour?
Cotton production takes up a large proportion of their exports and to stay on the competitive market, they must continue to supply at that rate. They have prioritised economic growth.
Why has there been 2% decrease in the use of child labour?
They have come under a lot of criticism from the UN and firms who use their cotton. Children eligible for primary education have gone back to school however, there’s been an increase in 11-18 year olds picking cotton.
What are the consequences of not sending children to the cotton farms?
Citizens could face a £150 fine, loss of arm lease, criminal charges and a loss of social security.
Why won’t child labour end any time soon?
There is a growing conflict between economic growth and human rights. The world bank is willing to help support countries suffering from a lack of production but there is political resistance from governments choosing to exploit citizens to show independence from colonial powers.
