Q

What is the name for the crust and upper mantle?

A

The lithosphere

20
Q

What is continental crust mainly made from?

A

Granite

21
Q

What is oceanic crust made from?

A

Basalt

22
Q

Which type of crust is thicker?

A

Continental crust

23
Q

Which type of crust is heavier?

A

Oceanic crust

24
Q

What are convection currents?

A

Convection currents are hot currents of molten rock that heat up and rise, then cool down and sink again

25
Q

What were all the continents called when they were joined together?

A

Pangea

26
Q

Fossils of which ancient reptile were found in sourthern Africa and South America?

A

Mesosaurus

27
Q

What are the three types of rock?

A

Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic

28
Q

What is sedimentary rock?

A

Rock made from layers of sediment and dead creatures

29
Q

What is igneous rock?

A

Rock made from magma that has cooled down and solidified

30
Q

what is metamorphic rock?

A

Rock made from existing rocks that has changed under high heat or pressure

31
Q

What is the name for the edges of the plates that make up the lithosphere?

A

Plate margins/plate boundaries

32
Q

What are the four types of plate boundaries?

A

Constructive, destructive, conservative, collision

33
Q

What happens on a constructive boundary?

A

Two plates move apart from each other, and hot magma rises up between the cracks, solidifies, and over time creates new land.

34
Q

What happens on a destructive boundary?

A

Two plates are pushed together and the oceanic plate slides under the continental plate. The oceanic crust begins to melt under the heat and the magma that once was the oceanic plate rises up under the continental plate to form a volcano

35
Q

What happens on a collision boundary?

A

Two plates crash into each other and cause earthquakes. Then the rocks between the plates get pushed up and folded.

36
Q

What happens on a conservative boundary?

A

Two plates are moving past each other, but one is moving faster. The plates then lock together and when they break apart there is a large earthquake.

37
Q

Name three igneous rocks

A

Pumice, granite, obsidian

38
Q

Name three metamorphic rocks

A

Marble, quartzite, gneiss

39
Q

Name three sedimentary rocks

A

Sandstone, limestone, slate

40
Q

What type of boundary is the San Andreas fault?

A

conservative boundary

41
Q

What are the three types of weathering?

A

Biological, chemical and physical

42
Q

What is an example of chemical weathering?

A

acid rain

43
Q

What causes physical weathering?

A

temperature

44
Q

Two examples of biological weathering would be…

A

…tree roots making their way into cracks in rocks and pushing them apart, or another example would be burrowing animals.

45
Q

What is the difference between weathering and erosion?

A

Erosion is the wearing away (and removal) of rocks, stone or soil (by wind, rain, waves or glaciers); however weathering is breaking down of a rock. (by anything from rain, to plant roots to animals to temperature)

46
Q

What are the most common atoms in rock?

A

Oxygen and Silicon

47
Q

What is the difference between magma and lava?

A

Magma is molten rock that is underground, lava is aboveground.
