Ambiguity
Boosts audience interest as they are encouraged to make up their own mind about what is happening, or they become suspicious of what they have not been explicitly told
Antithesis
Helps the audience define and comprehend complex ideas
Archetype
Makes it easy for audiences to categorise the character, concept or object based on what they resemble in literature

Allows the audience to become immersed in a setting and empathise more fully with a person and their situation

Encourages the audience to take action, or consider certain aspects of the text

Can also heighten a sense of the differences between past and present or cause the audience to mistrust what the characters think and say

Builds suspense and tension, highlights different ideas

Builds imagery to deepen the audience’s understanding and help give power to words by using different emotional, visual and sensory connections
