What are the requirements for a Tech-Check-tech (TCT) program in an institutional setting?
A
- Legislation was passed in 2007 to allow hospital pharmacies and closed-door pharmacies providing services to long-term facilities to develop and implement TCT program per approval of the Iowa BOP.
- in these programs, a certification technician may check the work of another certification technician in activities related:
a. to filling of floor stock, unit dose distribution systems,
b. proprietary bag and vial systems or manufactured premix intravenous products,
c. and AMDS components for hospital and long-term care patients.

Are Tech-Check-Tech programs allowed in community pharmacy practice based on Iowa Board of Pharmacy Rules?

- No,
- However legislation was pased in 2018 to allow the Iowa Board of Pharmacy to write rules for technician product verification (TPV) [formerly tech-check-tech] in all pharmacy settings including community practive.
- In 2012 and 2013, legislation was passed to allow the Board of Pharmacy to approve a pilot or research demonstration project in community pharmacy practice for up to an 18-month timeframe, with the opportunity to be renewed longer after that time.
- A cohort of community pharmacies have been researching TPV in their practice settings through this process.
- Those pharmacies that are not an approved pilot site cannot currently perform TCT activities in the community pharmacy setting.
