What is the Naloxone standing order?

A
  1. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) issued an initial standing order on Novemeber 3, 2016 (and is renewed annually) to ensure naloxone may be readily obtaining by: (1) individuals at risk of opioid-overdose, (2) caregiver or person in position to assist someone at risk of overdose, or (3) a first responder.
  2. The standing order may be issued as a prescription for eligible candidates.

What requirements must be met for a pharmacist to participate in the Naloxone Standing Order?

A
  1. A pharmacist must complete the training requirements (one-hour CE related to naloxone),
  2. Sign the naloxone standing order,
  3. and comply with all aspects of the standing order and Board rules.
  4. For each patient screened for naloxone, the assessment form must be completed, faxed to the IDPH within 7 days, and records maintained for at least 2 years.
