What is the Naloxone standing order?
A
- The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) issued an initial standing order on Novemeber 3, 2016 (and is renewed annually) to ensure naloxone may be readily obtaining by: (1) individuals at risk of opioid-overdose, (2) caregiver or person in position to assist someone at risk of overdose, or (3) a first responder.
- The standing order may be issued as a prescription for eligible candidates.

What requirements must be met for a pharmacist to participate in the Naloxone Standing Order?
A
- A pharmacist must complete the training requirements (one-hour CE related to naloxone),
- Sign the naloxone standing order,
- and comply with all aspects of the standing order and Board rules.
- For each patient screened for naloxone, the assessment form must be completed, faxed to the IDPH within 7 days, and records maintained for at least 2 years.
