What is a pharmacy-based EMS program?
A
- An emergency medical services (EMS) program is an integrated care delivery system that provides on-the-scene medical care or during patient transportation in an ambulance.
- In a pharmacy-based program, the medications used during care are under the ownership of the pharmacy.
- The pharmacist-in-charge is responsible for making sure the use and storage of these medications complies with all state and federal laws.
- Administration of schedule II medications must be followed by a written order by an authorized prescriber within seven days after the medication was authorized.
- Medications may be administered beyond the limits of a written protocol.
