belbin’s team types can be used to classify people in a team and identify where there may be imbalance
coordinator -stable, charismatic
shaper - leader
plant - creative
resource investigator - extroverted
implementer - turns decisions into tasks
monitor evaluator - objective, analytical
team worker - focusses on harmony in team
finisher - details and deadlines
specialist - single-minded, dedicated expert
disadvantages of belbin’s model
model is subjective, based on self report
(may not be reflective)
cause stereotyping (i.e. i am the finisher and therefore not creative

forming storming norming performing mourning
what is forming?
team undeveloped
enthusiasm, high motivation
uncertainties and anxieties - people unsure about their roles
PM facilitates ‘getting to know you’ process
team-building
what is storming?
Experimenting
people gain confidence, may be some disagreements as differences emerge
people ‘jockey for position’
teams can get stuck in this phase, PM needs to make decisions that move team forward. Strong facilitation needed and encouraging different viewpoints in constructive manner
what is norming?
consolidating
ground rules established
co-operative working and mutual support - motivation increases
danger of ‘groupthink’, PM must continue to challenge group
what is performing?
mature
performance at peak
groupthink and complacency may threaten effectiveness
PM must monitor performance of project and team
what is mourning?
winding down/letting go
motivation can dip, people feel loss for task and relationships
people may worry about their future and spending time looking for next job (or project) rather than on task at hand
PM can help by supporting team-members in looking for new job by networking with colleagues
