Teaching And Learning, Spring (Lecture 6) Flashcards
What are the types of learning?
• auditory - receiving & processing verbal instruction
• visual
• kinesthetic - both proprioceptive and vestibular
What are the stages of learning (3)?
- Cognitive phase
- Intermediate phase
- Automatic phase
Teaching styles
What would be the benefits of both?
- Teacher led:
- drills and progression
- reciprocal teaching
- guided discovery
- problem solving
Benefits - teacher knows more, can see what you’re doing wrong, can give guidance, reduces risk of injury or doing it wrong - Learner led
- problem solving
- guided discovery
- reciprocal teaching
- drills and progression
Benefits - knowledge will stick longer if you learn yourself,
Ways to increase safety
- Lower apparatus, raise matting
- Provide more lead-up activities to a skill
- Better physical preparation of athletes
- Disallow certain skills until gymnasts are more prepared to do it by themselves
- LANDING: teach them to manage their own bodies
Class management strategies
- Getting their attention
- Herding the wee ones
- Getting the class into groups
Maximizing participation
- Taking attendance
- Warm-up stretching
- Waiting for turns
- Changing stations
What are springs? Think back to fundamental movement patterns
Springs are a type of linear non stationary movement
Springing fundamentals
- Powerful muscles in take off limbs
- Rigid body
- Use of non support limbs to increase force
Springing devices
- Mini trampoline
- Beat board
The learning process
Learning can be thought of as ‘a relatively permanent change that is the result of experience
The cognitive (understanding) phase
- Getting the “feel” of a skill
- Trial and error, eliminate incorrect responses
- Do not over-teach, do not over-verbalize
- Gymnast has many cues and responses that later will be automatic
The intermediate phase
Noticeable learning takes place
- Errors are gradually being eliminated, performance more consistent
- Models important at this stage
- Verbalization = via key words
The automatic phase
- Performance consistent and automatic
- Fine-tuning stage
- specific parts to a skill can be isolated for conscious improvement
