Swings Flashcards
Mechanics of a swing?
Described as a rotation about an external axis such as a bar, rings, or the pommel
What are the 2 phases of a swing?
- Downward or descending phase
- Upward or ascending phase
When does the downward and descending phase happen?
During the descending phase of any swing, gravity acts as a positive off centre force causing or increasing the rotation about the axis (bar)
How can you maximize the positive effect of gravity during descending phase of a swing?
We must increase the distance between the bar and the body’s COM (off centre force) this means lengthening the body/ pushing the COM away from bar
When does the upward or ascending phase of a swing occur?
During the ascending phase of any swing, gravity acts as a negative off centre force decreasing the swing
How can you minimize the negative effect of gravity on the ascending phase of a swing?
We must decrease the distance between the bar and the body’s COM, shortening the body/bringing COM closer to bar
How should you grasp the bar?
Hook hands rather then squeeze
Why is squeezing the bar bad during swings
You will have difficulty maintaining your grasp on backward swing and tear hands quickly, more difficult swinging freely and safely
Evolution of all swings
All swings in gymnastics begin life as a support or as a hang (from stationary position to swing)
How to maximize safety during swings and minimize the risk of injury? (6)
- Swing at low amplitude
- Release bar (dismount) only at the top of the backward swing
- Regrasp the bar at the top of every backward swing
- Inverted swings
- Cross support swings
- Use gymnastics chalk when swinging
