TD-99 Flashcards
1
Q
- What information must be known prior to conducting route reconnaissance? (FTG)
A
As a minimum, the crew should know the designation, limits and units using the route, along with the times of the day used, weather and objectives.

Q
- What is the purpose of a route reconnaissance? (FTG, FM 3-34.170)
A
Purpose is to obtain detailed information about a specific route and all adjacent terrain where the enemy (or friendly) could influence movement along route.

Q
- List and describe the three different types of bypass conditions? (FTG, FM 3-34.170)
A
- Bypass easy. A US 5-ton can cross the obstacle within immediate vicinity of the bridge, without work to improve bypass.
- Bypass difficult. Can be crossed, but work is required to prepare bypass. (Est. time, troops and equipment needed to prepare bypass must be included on recon report)
- Bypass impossible. Bypass can be crossed only by repairing existing structure, or by constructing or establishing a new one.

Q
- Describe the characteristics of the three different road surface types (FTG, FM 3-34.170)
A
- X - All-weather: Passable through the year with the volume of traffic being almost as high as the road’s maximum capacity in good weather. Surface: waterproof, and only slightly affected by rain, frost, thaw or heat. EX: Concrete or bituminous roads.
- Y - Limited All-weather: With reasonable maintenance, can be kept open in bad weather, to a volume which is considerably less that its normal good-weather capacity. EX: Crushed rock or gravel.
- Fair weather: Quickly becomes impassable in bad weather. Seriously affected by rain, frost or thaw. EX: Natural or stabilized soil, sand, clay, shell or cinder roads.

Q
- Describe the seven factors to road classification? (FTG, FM 3-34.170)
A
- Surface type: May be concrete, blacktop, sand, gravel or clay.
- Width: Width in # lanes or meters. In hasty route recon scouting may not know traffic using route.
- Drainage: Important if sfc is gravel, clay or sand. Crwon height is determining for how well drainage works.
- Surface condition: Combat damage, cuts, craters, dirt slides, cracks, excessive erosion is important.
- Grades or curves: Grades of 7 percent or greater and sharp curves with 25-meter or less radius reduce suitability of the road.
- Drive-off capability: Shoulder condition, width and slope determines if vehicles can be parked off the road.
- Concealment: Trees overhanging shoulders offer some concealment for parked vehicles.
