Q

1) How do you differentiate between uplink and downlink?

2) If primary and secondary downlink is lost, will the aircraft enter RTH mode?

A

1) Downlink is cyan while Uplink is green
2) No, If only downlink is lost, the aircraft can still receive command from the shelter and the AV control panel will show orange as an indication downlink has been lost.

Q

What is the process of recycling the ACEs?

A

ACEs shall not be recycled while controlling the aircraft in-flight or on the ground. Turn LEG(s) off, cycle ACE(s) off for 20-30s. Cycle ACE(s) back on, cycle LEG(s) back on. The stingers may also have to be cycled. Once everything is back up, you may reestablish control.

Q

Explain how a command gets from the VCS to the AV and what each piece of equipment does.

A

VCS (Vehicle control Software) sende the commands to the RTC (Real Time Controller) which compliles the commands into a set data structure. It then goes to the ACE (Advanced Computing Elements) which translates the data to TCDL (Tactical Common Data Link) language format, the the LEG (Local Equipment Group). The LEG converts the signal from digital data to light signals and sends it to the REG (Remote equipment group) via fiber optic cable. The REG converts it back to digital data and passes it to the RFE (Radio Frequency Emitter). The LEG and REG combined make up the Mini-T (split) modem. The RFE provided modulation/demodulation and signal conditioning and sends the command out the antenna to the AV. Once the AV antennas receive the data packet, it goes to the RFE for demodulation, the Mini-T and the ground LEG/REG have the same functionality. The only difference is the ground side is split between the GCS and the GDT.
