GCS: purposes and pros
-Measure the severity of injury and the level of consciousness
-Easy enough that it could be universally used in a reliable manner
-Quick measure that would be repeated often to spot changes
-Could be used to guide treatment decisions
GCS: recommended administration
Immediately post injury and at 30 minutes
GCS: scoring and corresponding severities
3-8 = severe TBI
9-12 = moderate TBI
13-15 = mild TBI
GCS: eye opening response scores
1= no response
2 = eye opening to pain
3 = eye opening to speech
4 = spontaneous eye opening
GCS: best motor response scores
1 = no response
2 = extension of limbs
3 = flexion of limbs
4 = withdraws from stimulus
5 = localizes sensory stimulus
6 = obeys commands
GCS: best verbal response scores
1 = no response
2 = incomprehensible
3 = inappropriate
4 = confused
5 = oriented x3
Rancho Los Amigos purpose
-Measure used to track recovery and help determine readiness for different types of treatment approaches
-Focus is on cognition and behavior
-10 levels of cognitive functioning
