Ped TBI Outcomes

A

Most children are resilient and recover well following TBI, but some effects can cause problems later in life
-Academic challenges and difficulty finding a job
-Chronic behavioral problems
-Social isolation
-Difficulty with peer relationships
-Risk for offending behavior and incarceration
-Lower participation in activities
-Depression and other mental health diagnoses

Challenges related to peds specifically

A

Children may not have language to self report
-Changes in ability to pay attention, play (loss of interest), sleeping
habits, lethargy, sensitivity to light and/or noise
Children may be impacted differently based on neurodevelopmental stage
-Prognosis for functional recovery previously learned skills is better the younger injury is acquired but prognosis for acquiring new stills is worse this younger the child is
“developmental disruption”

Hospital to school transition

A

Avoid “watchful waiting”
Unmet needs increase from 6-24 mos
Best practice is to involve school team before hospital discharge so collaborative plan can be made
Communication between all stakeholders critical
