Executive Function Flashcards
Definition
The group of complex mental processes and cognition abilities
(such as working memory, impulse inhibition, and reasoning)
that control the skills
(such as organizing tasks, remembering details, managing time, and solving problems)
required for goal directed behavior
Challenges of EF assessment
-Testing environment provides structure that supports exec functions
-Only a brief snapshot of behavior
-Tests may not be sensitive to deficits in individuals’ strong premorbid skills
-Motivation may be limited during testing
-Tests may not allow for the use of compensatory strategies
Executive function examples
awareness, initiation, organization, working memory, flexibility, planning
Who has executive dysfunction
acquired brain injuries
progressive etiologies
those with developmental diagnoses (ADHD)
Why is exec. function important for or clients
because deficits create reduced response to therapy, worse outcomes for patients, worse outcomes for caregivers
Exec. function assessment purposes
create strengths and weakness profile
identify patient goals
guide treatment
identified baseline performance to track progress
only a breif snapshot of behavior
motivations may be limited during test
Intervention for executive dysfunction
metacognitive strategy training (self-monitoring and self regulations)
