What therapy is given for active TB?
Triple antibiotic therapy
TB: Isoniazid (INH, Hydrazide, PDP- Isoniazid)
Kills growing bacteria and inhibits growth of dormant bacteria
Take on empty stomach (prevent slowing of drug absorption in GI)
Take multivitamin
Do not drink alcohol - liver damage
Report dark urine, yellow skin, white eyes, bruise/bleed (liver toxicity or failure)
TB: Rifampin (RIF, Rifadin, Rimactane, Rofact)
Kills slow growing organisms
Orange/red stain of skin and urine
Contact lenses stained
Reduces BC
No alcohol - liver damage

Interacts with many drugs
TB: Pyrazinamide (PZA)
Kill organisms in acidic environment
Increases uric acid, Makes gout worse
8oz water - prevent uric acid
Photosensitivty (sun)
No alcohol - liver damage

TB: Ethambutol (EMB, Etibi, Myambutol)
Inhibits RNA synthesis, suppress bacterial growth
Slow acting and bacteriostatic (use w other anti TB drugs)
Changes in vision (optic neuritis) blindness
No alcohol - nausea and vomit
Increase uric acid - worse gout
8 oz water - prevent uric acid
