Jāgrat
The waking state
Where the individual interacts with the external world through the senses.
Svapna
The dream state
Where the mind creates a world of experiences using impressions from the waking state.
Suṣupti
The deep sleep state
Where there is no perception or mental activity, and one experiences bliss unconsciously.
Viśva
The experiencer (jīva) in the waking state, associated with the gross body.
Taijasa
The experiencer (jīva) in the dream state, associated with the subtle body.
Prājña
The experiencer (jīva) in the deep sleep state, associated with the causal body.
Āvasthātraya
The three states of consciousness
The waking, dream, and deep sleep state
Sākṣin
The witness
The consciousness that observes all three states but remains unaffected.
Ekātma
The one Self
Which is constant and unchanging across all three states.
Anubhava
Experience
Refers to the experiences unique to each state of consciousness.
Ānanda
Bliss
Experienced unconsciously in the deep sleep state (suṣupti).
Upādhi
Limitation or conditioning
Such as the gross, subtle, and causal bodies that condition the Self in each state.
Turīya
The fourth state
Which transcends the three states and represents pure consciousness or the ultimate reality (Ātman).
