What is the border between the anterior and posterior sections of the tongue called?
The sulcus terminalis
Where are the circumvallate papilla located and what is their innervation?
Anterior to sulcus terminalis but innervation same as posterior tongue- glossopharyngeal nerve
What is the nerve supply of the posterior tongue?
Glossopharyngeal nerve (CNIX)
Where does the glossopharyngeal nerve leave the cranial cavity?
Jugular foramen
What are the branches of the glossopharyngeal nerve that supply the tongue?
2 lingual branches- post sulcal branch to posterior tongue and other to circumvallate papillae
What is the nerve supply of the anterior tongue?
General- lingual nerve
Taste- facial nerve
Where does the lingual nerve arise from?
Posterior branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
Where does the lingual nerve run?
Down and forwards through the infratemporal fossa then close to the medial aspect of the mandible before entering the tongue.
Where does the facial nerve emerge from the skull?
Petrotympanic fissure
Where do the sensory fibres of the facial nerve run?
Through the corda tympani and joins the lingual nerve in the infratemporal fossa. They travel together to the tongue.
