What happens in the oral stage of swallowing?
Food bolus on tongue
Posterior oral cavity closed
What happens in the first pharyngeal stage of swallowing?
Soft pallate closes the nasopharynx.
Larynx begins to elevate
Food blous propelled into the pharyngeal cavity via an anteror to posterior movement of the tongue
What happens in the second stage of pharyngeal swallowing?
Pharyngeal contraction- soft pallate and posterior wall of pharynx lie against the posterior tongue.
Food bolus enters the pharynx.
Epiglottis closes the laryngeal aperture.
Upper oesophageal sphincter opens.
What happens in the oesophageal stage of swallowing ?
Food blous enters the oesophagus
Epiglottis reopens
UES remains open until food has fully passed through.
Peristaltic waves move the bolus down
LES opens and food is expelled into the stomach
What are the four stages of swallowing?
Oral, pharyngeal x2, oesophageal
