Task 8 - Human Error Flashcards
Automation
The use of technology or machines to perform tasks without human intervention, aiming to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
Adaptive Automation
A system that adjusts the level of automation based on real-time conditions or user input
Unexpected Automation Transitions
Situations where a system unexpectedly shifts between different levels of automation, often without clear warnings or user expectations
Out-of-the-loop (OOTL) performance problem
This occurs when a user becomes disengaged or less attentive due to prolonged automation, leading to a decline in their ability to effectively take control when needed.
Situation awareness (SA)
Refers to a user’s ability to remain aware of the system’s actions and any emerging issues, ensuring they can respond effectively if control is required.
Related: Generation effect, testing effect
Generation effect
Situation Awareness
The phenomenon where information is better remembered if the learner actively generates it, rather than passively receiving it (contributes to SA)
Testing effect
Situation awareness
The improvement in long-term memory retention as a result of taking tests or retrieving information. Actively recalling information during a test helps reinforce learning, even if the test is not used for grading (influences SA)
Automation Conundrum
While automation can improve efficiency and reduce human error, it can also lead to issues such as reduced human involvement, decreased skills, and over-reliance on technology.
