Task 7 Flashcards
What characteristics do discrete theories of emotions have?
- There is a finite set of basic emotions
- Expression of these emotions is defined
What does the abbreviation in PAD-Theory Stand for?
Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance - The three dimensions of a dimensional theory of emotions often used in computational models
What is an appraisal variable?
The factors, one uses to evaluate emotional cues - is it desirable? Is it expected? etc.
What is a criticism of appraisal theories of emotion?
The evaluation of appraisal variables requires cognitive effort, which doesn’t leave room for emotional reflexive responses
Which kinds of emotional theories are used in the three stages of an EMA Model?
Perception and Emotion Derivation: Appraisal Theory
Development of behavioral responses: Discrete Theories
The coping strategies that are formed by EMA can affect which steps of the process?
They can bias perception, direct action, and interfere with causal attributions/appraisal
What is something that is still difficult to model computationally in the context of emotion?
Complex social emotions like embarrassment
What are three approaches that were used to validate the EMA Model?
- Experimentally measuring participants’ emotions and comparing results to EMA predictions
- Linking intra- and interpersonal emotion: Having participants predict the reactions of EMA as if it was human
- Using EMA to predict future human behavior
Why is it often difficult to compare individual artificial emotion systems?
Many AES are designed for a specific task and have differently assembled components of different emotional theories
In a proposed general framework, there are three phases of AES. What are they?
1) Evaluation of emotional Stimuli
2) Recognition of Emotions
3) Emotional Modulation of Behavior
How does the Sociality Motivation explain that some people humanize non-human entities?
According to it, there is a human need and desire to establish social connections with other humans. If no human are available, other objects are used.
How does effectance motivation theory explain the phenomenon of anthropomorphism?
There is a human need for mastery and control over the given social environment. When we encounter unknown agents, we try to find common ground between us and the unknown agent. We do this for example by assigning human features to a robot.
What is the uncanny valley?
There is a dip where a more human looking robot makes us less empathic with them.
