Task 1 Flashcards
central nervous system
consists of the brain and the spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
consists of somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
autonomic nervous system
regulates the body’s internal enviroment
somatic nervous system
interacts with the external enviroment
afferent nerves
carry sensory signal towards the central nervous system and
efferent nerves
carry motor signals from the central nervous system towards skeletal muscles and organs
sympathetic nerves
controls the body’s responses to a perceived threat and is responsible for the “fight or flight” response. Is part of the autonomic nervous system’s efferent nerves
parasympathetic nervous system
controls homeostasis and the body at rest and is responsible for the body’s “rest and digest” function. Is part of the autonomic nervous system’s efferent nerves.
blood-brain barrier
Mechanism that impedes the passage of toxic substances from blood to the brain. In the brain the cells of the cerebral blood vessel walls are tightly packed, forming a barrier to the passage of many molecules
dendrites
Transmit impulses from synapses to the cell body
axons
Carry the impulse away from the cell body
proximal
close
distal
far
different sections of the brain (slices)
horizontal, frontal, sagittal sections ( and cross section: is cut at a right angle to any long, narrow structure)
gray matter
composed largely of cell bodies and unmyelinated interneurons
white matter
composed largely of myelinated axons
Brainstem
medulla+pons+midbrain
medulla (myelencephalon)
Is composed of tracts that carry signals between the brain and the body+ reticular formation
reticular formation
consists of 100 nuclei that are involved in a variety of functions: movement, sleep, attention, reflexes and muscle tone.
pons
tracts+ reticular formation (same things as medulla)
midbrain
Also mesencephalon. Is the tectum+ tegmentum.
metencephalon
pons + cerebellum
cerebellum
important sensorimotor structure
tectum
visual and auditory function
tegmentum
reticular formation + mediating analgesic (pain reducing) effects if drugs + sensorimotor system function
diencephalon
thalamus + hypothalamus
tract
a bundle of axons found within the central nervous system
