19
Q

why should we avoid continuous taping?

A

bc it tend to create tighter pressure and cut off circulation unless you practice A LOT

23
Q

what are some ways to remove tape?

A

shower helps

alcohol wipes

cut it with scissors or sharks

24
Q

when are circular and spica strips used?

A

in arch taping

wrist, hand, fingers

anatomical splinting

25
Q

how many strips of tape will typically cover the wrist?

A

3-4 strips

26
Q

what anatomical structures should be covered with wrist taping?

A

the first (and possibly second) row of carpals, distal radial and ulna

27
Q

what are the steps in wrist taping?

A

Inspect skin

Spray

Pre-wrap (1 layer)

Make a fist/hold the wrist in neutral

Lay down first c strip and tear starting distally then layer strips proximally with 50% overlap

Check distal circulation (capillary bed refill)

28
Q

when are C strips used?

A

for weakened arch

29
Q

what are the steps in applying C strips?

A

Hold the foot in neutral

Pre-wrap not usually used, but when it is used, enclose the whole ankle

Base at the met heads and around the Achilles from med to lat

Appy C strips from lat to med, close to the heel first

Pull up the C strips as you go

Overlap by ½

Close over the met heads and around Achilles

30
Q

what are the “X”, “fan”, “low dye”, and “teardrop” taping techniques used for?

A

to support the longitudinal arch

to stabilize the foot

31
Q

what are the steps involved in “x”, “fan”, “teardrop” taping?

A

Pre-wrap up the ankles

Base at the met heads, base around the Achilles

1 inch tape

Teardrop: start on one side, pass over the heel, and end at the same point as the start

Fan/”X”: starts at one met, crosses the heel, ends at the opposite side

Each pass gets closer to cover the whole arch

Closures over the bases

32
Q

what is low-dye taping used for?

A

arch support

plantar fasciitis

33
Q

what tape must be used for low dye taping?

A

Moleskin bc it is more rigid and less elastic

34
Q

what does low dye taping do?

A

manages fallen medial arch, foot pronation, arch strains, and plantar fasciitis

35
Q

what taping technique is used for a sprained great toe (turf toe)?

A

modified “x” taping

36
Q

what is a turf toe?

A

a hyperextension injury

37
Q

what position do we want to tape a turf toe into?

A

at least 30 deg flexion

38
Q

what tendon is affected in turf toe?

A

the flexor hallicus longus

39
Q

what tape do we use for turf toe?

A

AC tape or elasticon with white zinc tape

40
Q

what is better for bunions, brace or taping?

A

brace, but neither really makes too much of a difference

41
Q

what taping technique do we use for a toe fx without angulation?

A

“buddy-taping”

42
Q

if there is an angulation in the fracture, do we use buddy taping?

43
Q

t/f: anytime we want to support the toes/fingers, we try to create an anatomical splint with the next digit

44
Q

what is a common ankle taping technique?

A

closed backet weave (Gibney)

45
Q

what are the steps for lateral ankle taping?

A

Hold ankle in at least 90 deg DF

Overlap by ½

Pads on front and back of ankle (diamond in front, square in back)

Prewarp to high ankle

3 proximal base locks at ankle, 1 distal base lock at met heads

3 stirrups, 3 horseshoes

Figure 8 in each direction (use navicular as guide to start) (x2)

Start medial, go under the arch to the top of the foot, under the Achilles, and over the top of the foot

Heel locks in each direction (x2)

Pulling up into eversion

Close the base and work your circles up the calf changing the angle as you go up

46
Q

what do we want to support with shin splints?

A

support the arch!!!

47
Q

which muscle/tendon are we looking to support in shin splints?

A

the tibialis posterior

48
Q

do we use X taping for an MCL injury?

49
Q

do we use X taping for an LCL injury?

50
Q

do we use X taping for knee hyperextension?

51
Q

do we use X taping for a UCL (valgus stress) injury?

A

probably not

52
Q

do we use X taping for an RCL (varus stress) injury?

A

probably not

53
Q

t/f: a pt with an RCL/UCL injury should probably get a brace, not taping

54
Q

what is a sue of Kinesio tape/rock tape that is well supported by the literature?

A

edema/swelling reduction

55
Q

is Kinesio taping/rock taping for Ms activation/inhibition well supported in the literature?
