Taping Flashcards
what are the common reasons people site using taping in sports medicine settings?
to help with proprioception
prevention of injury
compression
what are some common uses of taping techniques?
compression to minimize swelling
reduce chances of injury prior to injury occuring (prophylactic taping)
provide additional support to an injured area
muscles activation/inhibition (not really supported)
what is the biggest indicator for a lateral ankle sprain?
decreased DF
t/f: the more ankle sprains someone has, the poorer their outcomes
true
what is the biggest risk factor for future ankle sprains?
having a hx of ankle sprains
t/f: ankle taping is more effective in a pt with a hx of ankle injury
true
is a brace or tapping generally better for prophylaxis?
bracing
what are bandaged frequently used for in sports medicine?
to cover wounds and provide compression
what is non-elastic and elastic adhesive tape used for?
retention of dressings/compression dressing
support recent injury to aid in RTP (limit motion)
possibly for prophylaxis???
t/f: all tape works the same
FALSE, NOT ALL TAPE IS CREATED EQUAL
when purchasing a tape, what must we consider?
the tape grade (fiber count)
tension
brand reputation
cost
t/f: elastic tape is typically more comfortable and multi-purpose
true
what is the best choice elastic adhesive to limit motion/joint action?
Elastikon (J+J)
t/f: light tapes offer less strength, but are easier to use
true
what should we do every time before taping?
INSPECT THE SKIN AND SENSATION
what are the contraindications/precautions for taping?
Open wounds
Areas of infection
Areas of altered/diminished sensation
Areas of altered/diminished blood flow
Weak/frail skin
Acute injury (with deformity)
what are the general rules for applying tape?
remove hair
clean and dry the area
spray the area (adhesive spray)
pad bony prominances
how much overlap should there be when taping?
overlap by 1/2
why should we avoid continuous taping?
bc it tend to create tighter pressure and cut off circulation unless you practice A LOT
t/f: when taping, allow the tape to fit to the area’s natural curve
true
why should we use caution with tape application immediately after PT tx?
bc some of our tx affects circulation and sensation
when we are removing the tape, we should hold the skin and pull the tape the ____ direction
opposite
what are some ways to remove tape?
shower helps
alcohol wipes
cut it with scissors or sharks
when are circular and spica strips used?
in arch taping
wrist, hand, fingers
anatomical splinting
how many strips of tape will typically cover the wrist?
3-4 strips
what anatomical structures should be covered with wrist taping?
the first (and possibly second) row of carpals, distal radial and ulna
what are the steps in wrist taping?
Inspect skin
Spray
Pre-wrap (1 layer)
Make a fist/hold the wrist in neutral
Lay down first c strip and tear starting distally then layer strips proximally with 50% overlap
Check distal circulation (capillary bed refill)
when are C strips used?
for weakened arch
what are the steps in applying C strips?
Hold the foot in neutral
Pre-wrap not usually used, but when it is used, enclose the whole ankle
Base at the met heads and around the Achilles from med to lat
Appy C strips from lat to med, close to the heel first
Pull up the C strips as you go
Overlap by ½
Close over the met heads and around Achilles
what are the “X”, “fan”, “low dye”, and “teardrop” taping techniques used for?
to support the longitudinal arch
to stabilize the foot
what are the steps involved in “x”, “fan”, “teardrop” taping?
Pre-wrap up the ankles
Base at the met heads, base around the Achilles
1 inch tape
Teardrop: start on one side, pass over the heel, and end at the same point as the start
Fan/”X”: starts at one met, crosses the heel, ends at the opposite side
Each pass gets closer to cover the whole arch
Closures over the bases
what is low-dye taping used for?
arch support
plantar fasciitis
what tape must be used for low dye taping?
Moleskin bc it is more rigid and less elastic
what does low dye taping do?
manages fallen medial arch, foot pronation, arch strains, and plantar fasciitis
what taping technique is used for a sprained great toe (turf toe)?
modified “x” taping
what is a turf toe?
a hyperextension injury
what position do we want to tape a turf toe into?
at least 30 deg flexion
what tendon is affected in turf toe?
the flexor hallicus longus
what tape do we use for turf toe?
AC tape or elasticon with white zinc tape
what is better for bunions, brace or taping?
brace, but neither really makes too much of a difference
what taping technique do we use for a toe fx without angulation?
“buddy-taping”
if there is an angulation in the fracture, do we use buddy taping?
NO!!!
t/f: anytime we want to support the toes/fingers, we try to create an anatomical splint with the next digit
true
what is a common ankle taping technique?
closed backet weave (Gibney)
what are the steps for lateral ankle taping?
Hold ankle in at least 90 deg DF
Overlap by ½
Pads on front and back of ankle (diamond in front, square in back)
Prewarp to high ankle
3 proximal base locks at ankle, 1 distal base lock at met heads
3 stirrups, 3 horseshoes
Figure 8 in each direction (use navicular as guide to start) (x2)
Start medial, go under the arch to the top of the foot, under the Achilles, and over the top of the foot
Heel locks in each direction (x2)
Pulling up into eversion
Close the base and work your circles up the calf changing the angle as you go up
what do we want to support with shin splints?
support the arch!!!
which muscle/tendon are we looking to support in shin splints?
the tibialis posterior
do we use X taping for an MCL injury?
yes!
do we use X taping for an LCL injury?
yes!
do we use X taping for knee hyperextension?
yes!
do we use X taping for a UCL (valgus stress) injury?
probably not
do we use X taping for an RCL (varus stress) injury?
probably not
t/f: a pt with an RCL/UCL injury should probably get a brace, not taping
true
what is a sue of Kinesio tape/rock tape that is well supported by the literature?
edema/swelling reduction
is Kinesio taping/rock taping for Ms activation/inhibition well supported in the literature?
nope
